Hope & Compassion at the only
Youth Shelter in Jackson County

The Hearts With A Mission Youth Shelter is located at 521 Edwards Street in West Medford.
We provide emergency shelter for up to 72 hours —or up to 120 days with parental or guardian consent— for youth ages 10 to 17. The shelter includes 3 separate safe quadrants, consisting of 8 bedrooms, with a total of 16 beds. A safe exit plan is developed through individual case management. Youth can stabilize and stay in school while moving towards family re-unification, alternate family living, or pursuing self-sufficiency.

Jackson County has an Unseen Problem

2009-2010 Homeless Youth K-12 Counts:
  • 1,852 homeless youth in Jackson County. Many youth are not attending school, or are unidentified.
  • 1,139 homeless youth were identified as attending school in Medford School District 549c.
  • 290 youth were identified as unaccompanied youth, unsheltered, living in a car, tent, under a bridge, etc. Unaccompanied homeless youth are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
  • Homeless students represent 9.44% of the Medford School District’s student body.
  • Our community provides shelter and services for adults, but often homeless and at-risk youth are overlooked. Most homeless youth are not eligible for foster home placement and cannot stay at other emergency shelters with or without a legal guardian. Many of these youth do not link with services and agencies that can help. Others are a crime away from getting help. Some lose hope and turn to drugs and alcohol or end up in a life on the streets.
  • Law defines homeless youth as minors who lack an adequate, fixed nighttime residence. Included are those living in public places, vehicles, campgrounds, motels, shelters, multiple-family dwellings or a friend's residence. Those who move three or more times in a year are also considered homeless under the law. However, due to the strict enforcement of curfew and loitering ordinances, homeless youth are rarely visible.
