Your support has enabled us to provide 42 teens with 1250 nights of shelter.
Updated 7/16/10.
Hearts With A Mission Youth Shelter is located at 521 Edwards St. in West Medford.
We provide temporary emergency shelter, or up to 120 days with written parental consent,
for youth ages 10 to 17. The shelter includes 3 separate safe quadrants, consisting of 9 bedrooms, with a total of 17 beds. We cooperate with all law enforcement agencies. Our intention is to not duplicate services, but fill a gap that has been missing in our community. Youth have individual case management and access to services to re-establish family ties
or in cases when that is not suitable, access to other appropriate housing, or services.
Thanks to You…
Jackson County has an Unseen Problem
2009 Statistics
- 1709 homeless youth in Jackson County. Many youth are not attending school, or unidentified.
- 1126 homeless youth were identified as attending school in Medford School District 549c.
- 193 youth were identified as unaccompanied youth, unsheltered, living in a car, tent, under a bridge, etc. Unaccompanied homeless youth are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
- Medford ranks second only to Portland for the highest number of homeless youth in the State of Oregon. Homeless students represent almost 9% of the Medford School District’s student body, compared to statewide average rate of 2.8%.
- Our community provides shelter and services for adults, but often homeless and at-risk youth are overlooked. Most homeless youth are not eligible for foster home placement and cannot stay at other emergency shelters with or without a legal guardian. Many of these youth do not link with services and agencies that can help. Others are a crime away from getting help. Some lose hope and turn to drugs and alcohol or end up in a life on the streets.
- Law defines homeless youth as minors who lack an adequate, fixed nighttime residence. Included are those living in public places, vehicles, campgrounds, motels, shelters, multiple-family dwellings or a friend's residence. Those who move three or more times in a year are also considered homeless under the law. However, due to the strict enforcement of curfew and loitering ordinances, homeless youth are rarely visible.
